TradFi Perpetual Contracts Surge to $2B on Crypto Exchanges
The expansion is not diffuse — it is concentrated on three venues, and the structure mirrors the underlying crypto perpetual stack.

TradFi perpetuals cross $2B in OI: where the liquidity actually sits
According to CryptoQuant data cited by crypto.news, open interest in perpetual contracts tied to stocks, metals, and crude oil has lifted from a spring 2026 baseline of $350M–$500M to cross $2B by late July. The expansion is not diffuse — it is concentrated on three venues, and the structure mirrors the underlying crypto perpetual stack.
Concentration map
The segment-level breakdown from CryptoQuant's headline snapshot:
- Binance: ~$720M TradFi perpetual OI (≈35% of the segment)
- Bybit: ~$381M
- Gate: ~$381M
- Top 3 combined: ≈70%
- Top 5 (adding OKX and Bitget): ≈93%
The remainder is dispersed across smaller venues. The same hierarchy holds in the crypto perpetual market it sits inside: Binance at $22.86B (35%), Bybit at $9.67B, Gate at $8.61B — top three controlling ~63%, top five ~81%. Aggregate crypto perpetual OI peaked near $80B in September 2025, held a similar level in early 2026, and has since contracted ~20% to ~$65B. CryptoQuant reads the contraction as deleveraging rather than capital rotation. TradFi perpetuals, at ~3% of the crypto derivatives complex, are too small to absorb that flow even if the growth rate persists.
Practical read for copy traders and signal providers
- Slippage assumptions need re-calibration. A $720M book with thin depth on individual names (single equities, oil, metals) behaves differently from a $22.86B book with continuous crypto rotation. Signal providers running copy strategies on these products should not assume that execution benchmarks from crypto perpetuals transfer.
- Venue differentiation is muted. With ~70% of TradFi perpetual OI sitting on the same three platforms used by most crypto signal providers, edge will come from fee tier, API latency to those matching engines, and funding-rate capture mechanics — not from venue selection alone.
- US routing is a different instrument. Coinbase Financial Markets offers CFTC-regulated perpetual-style futures to US customers on five-year terms with funding payments. The funding mechanism is comparable to offshore perpetuals; the contract structure is not. Copy platforms that route US accounts to offshore perpetuals versus Coinbase's regulated product will show different margin treatment, disclosure requirements, and effective cost of carry.
- Concentration risk is bidirectional. Top-three venue dominance means a single operational event (matching engine degradation, withdrawal halt, API rate-limit change) propagates across most copy strategies simultaneously. Liquidity fragmentation is not a hedge here.
What to monitor
Funding-rate differentials between offshore TradFi perpetuals and the underlying cash markets remain the cleanest arbitrage signal for systematic strategies. The next CryptoQuant OI print — whether the segment holds above $2B or retraces toward the $1.5B–$1.8B band — will indicate whether the doubling reflects structural capital migration or short-dated hedge overlay around a specific catalyst. Signal providers publishing TradFi-perpetual strategies should disclose execution venue, funding interval, and slippage tested under their documented lot size; the absence of those specs is now a red flag rather than a neutral omission.
